There's another reason for Rockdale area high school football fans to be excited this week, as college football kicks off.

With the college football season starting Thursday, it also marks the beginning of a new program just west of Rockdale at Georgia State University.

The Panthers open their inaugural season against Shorter College, and a former Salem High standout.

Last week freshman Bradley Moon earned a starting position on Shorter's special teams, and will be putting his talent on display within 30 miles of his former high school field.

Moon will oppose another Rockdale gridiron star in Ronald Martin, who is listed on the Georgia State roster as a 6-foot-1 freshman offensive lineman.

Georgia State and Shorter square off at 7:30 p.m. in the Georgia Dome on Thursday.
