Most of the athletic department at Heritage High school will have a different look for the 2010-11 school year as there has been four coaching changes in the last month.
Boys basketball coach Ron Bradley retired, baseball coach Casey Teal has stepped down and will only serve as a teacher, and girls basketball coach Dave LaBarrie and volleyball coach Dave Buddenbaum are stepping down to serve as administrators.
After a long tenure with the Patriots, including four trips to the Class AAAA final four and a championship series appearance in 2007, Teal will continue teaching at Heritage after stepping down a month ago.
Heritage and its Athletic Director Chuck Landy are close to naming a coach, and pending board approval will most likely make an announcement early this week.
Bradley decided earlier on in the season that his 50th year of coaching would be his last.
"When he came here, his goal was to get three years with us so he could get to 50 years," Landy said. "We were so glad to have him here."
Bradley's assistant Drew Williams will take over for the coaching legend.
"We interviewed some very good coaches, but obviously we felt like Drew had worked hard and done everything he could to get a chance," Landy said. "He's getting the opportunity he deserved."
There will also be an assistant in a head coaching role for the girls' hardcourt representatives as Chris Pennamon takes over for LaBarrie.
LaBarrie also serves as Heritage's Assistant Principal; therefore, he can no longer coach according to Rockdale Board of Education practices.
The board started conversations two years ago and brought it back up in September to limit administrators to one role. LaBarrie and Sims Elementary Assistant Principal, Buddenbaum were allowed to finish out the school year as coaches but had to be replaced for the upcoming term.
"We told them you need to find someone," said Lee Davis, Rockdale County Board of Education Chief Financial Officer. "You can't serve two masters."
Landy moved quickly to fill the two positions, finding a volleyball coach with Georgia ties who now comes a long way to Conyers.
Shawn Darling was an assistant volleyball coach at Cameron University in Oklahoma after playing for four consecutive state title teams at Woodward Academy. Darling will lead the Lady Patriots volleyball team in the fall.
