John Starr's first spring with the Salem football team came to an end Monday, as the Seminoles played their 2010 spring game.
Overall Starr was pleased with his new team's effort throughout the two weeks of practice, and came away less concerned from the spring game.
"The spot we were concerned about was no longer a concern for me," Starr said.
Before the game Starr was worried about his inexperience at linebacker, but was alleviated of that thought following the intersquad matchup.
"I think the thing that probably stood out to me the most was probably the intensity that we played with on defense," Starr said. "I was really pleased with how the kids got off the ball and got after it. They really ran to the ball real well."
Among the players who stepped up in the linebacker position were Kenan Clark, Jahod Coleman, John Lewis and DeAndre Herd.
"They all played extremely well," Starr said. "I was concerned about linebacker, because we graduated so many, but guys stepped up and really played good."
Also stepping up was a couple of freshman and a sophomore on the defensive line.
"I thought the defensive front was pretty special," Starr said. "Several kids in that group played extremely well."
In starting the program under his tutelage Starr wanted the defense to be first, and play with intensity. Throughout his first spring, the Seminoles fulfilled that want.
"I wanted to see how well they go to the ball and how excited they are to play defense," Starr said. "We've got people who play defense the way you're supposed to, to have a chance to play."
On offense the Seminoles ran Starr's wing-T with Jarrett Brown under center.
Brown, a defensive back, proved he could both run the ball as well as throw out of the run-heavy offense.
"He showed a lot of leadership running the ball and was throwing the ball extremely good," Starr said.
Among Brown's targets was Robert Weaver, who Starr said did a nice job at receiver.
The Seminoles will continue to try to fine tune their offense and will come back together for workouts on June 7.
"Some things we did offensively weren't as crisp as they should have been," Starr said. "After 10 days I don't expect midseason form, but I expect to be a little more concise on the offensive side of the ball.
"The June 7 workouts will be a pretty intense time for us."
