Salem football wrapped up its first spring practice session under new head coach John Starr Friday with a maroon vs. white spring game.
It was the unveiling of the Seminoles new wing-T offense, and a new enjoy-football-first attitude under Starr.
For two weeks Salem has been getting adapted to its new coach, and he has been learning the personalities of his new players.
"We're having a good time," Starr said. We wanted to make football fun. We're having a good time out there - the staff is - the players are working hard, and having a good time doing it."
Starr has been leading his players through learning the new offense, as well as keeping lines of communication open during huddles and when a unit is on the sidelines awaiting their turn at a drill.
"We want to be intense but at the same time hold stress level down," Starr said. "I do a lot of talking; having a good time hopefully the players like that. There's less stress."
Starr takes over a team that went 6-4, including a season opening 2-3 win over Heritage followed by a 21-14 victory over state semifinalist Rockdale.
After being hired to fill Chad Estes' head coaching position in February, Starr has been trying to get the Seminoles on board with his coaching approach, the wing-T offense and his 4-3 base defense.
"We're pretty much on schedule," Starr said. "Obviously our defense is a little bit faster than our offense right now. The offense is taking it slow. We're trying not to overload the brain with too much stuff.
"They've really grasping the concept now."
A defensive back in 2009, Jarrett Brown, has been at the helm of the Seminole's run-heavy wing-T offense, and is heading into 2010 as the starting quarterback.
"For the most part the entire offense has taken on an overhaul," Starr said.
The offense will rely on running the ball in between the tackles, but Brown and company has also been throwing the ball around during spring practices.
"I think the quarterback has a nice arm and some nice receivers which give us the opportunity to throw a little more than a conventional wing-T team," Starr said. "You've got to be able to run the football, we kind of taken that approach."
On defense, Salem has been working on keeping its defense moving toward the ball, and playing on enthusiasm.
"I've been very pleased with our effort on defense," Starr said. "Defense is just about attitude as it is skill level. Finding people who want to play wide open all the time is what we're looking for."
Starr said he's been impressed with the linebacker play, where four guys have stepped up for three spots.
Overall the Seminoles have impressed their new coach for the two weeks of spring practices, and now he Starr wants to see them continue to come together.
"I think we finally understand the tempo you have to play this game at," Starr said. "We've still got a long way to go, getting cohesiveness and an expectation to win.
"They have really good attitudes right now. We're working really hard, which is as much as we can ask."
