Despite more winter temperatures, spring sports kicked off this week as area baseball and soccer teams took to the fields.
Six games took place on the diamond, with each area school playing twice.
Salem was the only team to come away victorious, winning both its matchups.
The Seminoles also started the week, winning 12-3 at Newton on Monday in a game shortened to four innings due to problems with the lights.
Tyler McLendon, Gazzarda Mitchell and Josh Bailey had two hits each, with Mitchell and McLendon knocking in two runs apiece and Bailey stealing two bases.
Salem played two days later, winning again Wednesday, 10-8 at Woodland.
Cameron Gibson, who had a strong legion season, continued his solid play at the start of the high school slate. The Seminoles' center fielder had two hits, including a home run, and two RBI. Gibson also had two putouts, and two assists, turning two double plays.
Levi Bonilla added two hits and two RBI, and Josh Bailey had two hits and two walks.
While Salem got off to a good start, Rockdale and Heritage didn't get their ideal results.
Both teams are 0-2 heading into the second week of the young season.
Rockdale fell 7-3 to Eastside on Tuesday, giving up 11 hits, and connecting on just five.
The Bulldogs led 1-0 in the first, but the Eagles quickly answered with three runs.
Rockdale didn't fair any better in its second game under new coach Justin Arrington, losing 17-1 to Hebron Christian on Thursday.
The Bulldogs are looking to work in several new players after losing a strong senior class, including 2009 ace Buck Farmer. Farmer went on to play for Georgia Tech.
Heritage was the only team to host a game, but the results were the same as Rockdale, starting the season 0-2.
The Patriots couldn't get the bats going, falling 4-0 to Marist on Tuesday.
Marist pitcher Evan Geist and two relievers combined for a no-hitter against Heritage.
Geist, who struck out eight straight Heritage batters, allowed just two walks in four innings.
The Patriots had another tough test Thursday on the road, but were beat 10-3 to defending Class AAA Cartersville.
Heritage plays just one game in the coming week, hosting East Rowan from North Carolina on Saturday.
Salem hosts Woodland on Monday, travels to Alcovy Tuesday and will host Eagles Landing on Friday. The Bulldogs visit Newton on Monday and then return to Rockdale to host Riverdale on Wednesday.
